Match Preview: Macclesfield Town vs Grimsby Town

26 December 2019

The Silkmen return to Sky Bet League Two action later today, as we welcome Grimsby Town to the Moss Rose for our Sky Bet League Two Boxing Day fixture.

The Mariners visit the Moss Rose two places and three points ahead of us in the Sky Bet League Two standings, although our superior goal difference would see us overtake the Blundell Park side with a victory.

Recent Form

Macc face a Grimsby side on a 13 match winless run in all competitions, a period stretching back to the end of September.

The Silkmen, however, come into the game on a four-game draw streak; including away stalemates at Salford and Walsall alongside home draws against Mansfield Town and promotion hopefuls Bradford City.

Last Time Out

The Mariners are a side we have gotten to know well this season, having faced them twice already this campaign in all competitions; although both clashes so far have taken place away at Blundell Park.

A 5-4 penalty shootout defeat ended our Carabao Cup campaign at the second round stage before a narrow 1-0 league defeat followed just 11 days later.

Daryl and the team will no doubt relish the prospect of avenging these defeats come Thursday afternoon.

Ones to Watch

James Hanson has been Grimsby’s star player so far this campaign, netting five goals and adding four assists in all competitions so far this season.

Ethan Robson is another dangerman for the Blundell Park side; his goal condemned us to defeat at Blundell Park in September.

That strike helped the Sunderland loanee scoop the PFA Fans Sky Bet League Two Player of the Month award for September.

We look forward to welcoming you all back to the Moss Rose and would like to thank you for your continued support at this time.

Match Report: Macclesfield Town 1-1 Grimsby Town

26 December 2019

Macclesfield Town played out a score draw at the Moss Rose this afternoon as a resilient performance ensured we would take a point against a rejuvenated Grimsby Town side.

The draw extends Macc’s unbeaten run to five as Joe Ironside saw his opener cancelled out by a Charles Vernam strike.

Both sides had spells during a scrappy encounter with a draw a fair reflection of the afternoon’s proceedings.

Grimsby started the better of the sides and had a golden opportunity to open the scores early on, but Max Wright’s effort cleared Owen Evans’ crossbar from close in after Charles Vernam’s cutback.

Macc responded to this early Grimsby pressure through a Fiacre Kelleher header which flew just over the Grimsby crossbar.

The visitors would have the next chance of note in an even first half, with Moses Ogbu heading wide when it looked easier to hit the target.

The Silkmen began to dominate in the latter stages of the first half and were almost rewarded when Emmanuel Osadebe went through on goal after a poor defensive header from the Mariners’ backline; but he couldn’t hit the target from the edge of the area.

Our final chance of the half fell to Nathan Cameron, but he couldn’t keep his header on target from Jak McCourt’s free kick.

The second period started in the same vein with Macc well on top; and this dominance was rewarded when substitute Joe Ironside was tripped just inside the Grimsby area.

Ironside picked himself up and took the spot kick himself, firing the ball past McKeown to give Macc a deserved lead.

The Mariners responded with their best spell of the game and hit the crossbar through Charles Vernam after a good cross from Jake Hessenthaler.

Vernam would not be denied moments later as he capitalised on some hesitation from the Silkmen backline to break through and slide the ball past Evans to drag the visiting side level.

Substitute Ahkeem Rose was next to try his luck for Grimsby as they continued to press, but his volleyed effort lacked the necessary composure and failed to trouble Evans.

Nathan Cameron came close with another header as Macc looked to stem the tide of Grimsby pressure, but his effort looped just over McKeown’s crossbar.

Whilst Grimsby continued to press as the game petered towards its conclusion, the Silkmen backline held firm and the game ended level.
