Match Preview: Carlisle United v Macclesfield Town

29 December 2018

Macclesfield Town head to Brunton Park this afternoon to face Carlisle United, as we look to round off 2018 in style against The Cumbrians.

After Wednesday’s victory over Notts County, Sol and the team made it four wins from six league matches, a run of form we will be looking to continue going into Saturday’s tie against our high-flying hosts.

Here is what Sol had to say ahead of the game:

The lads are set to be without Callum Evans (ankle), Elliott Durrell (knee) and Rhys Taylor (hip), yet whichever eleven are chosen will be giving their all for the cause.

As always, your support will be as crucial as ever and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at Brunton Park, where we will be looking to overcome Carlisle for the second time this season.

Carlisle come into the match after a convincing 6-0 victory over Oldham and now sit in 9th place in the Sky Bet League Two standings after accumulating 36 points from their 24 games this season.

Our hosts have hit form this month, winning three of their four league games in December, scoring 13 times in that run.

Here is what opposition defender Garry Liddle had to say ahead of the match:

“You only get a new manager when things aren’t going too well, so Sol Campbell has come in and he’s got them picking up good results.

“They’ll have a different style of play from last time we played them, but we’ll do our homework and we’ll be going out to make it four wins in a row.”

Match Reports

Match Report: Carlisle United 2 v 1 Macclesfield Town

29 December 2018

Macclesfield fell to a narrow defeat away at Carlisle United as goals from Hallam Hope and Jerry Yates were enough to cancel out Scott Wilson’s early strike at Brunton Park.

The defeat was tough on Macc who were in control for large spells of the game; but a host of missed first half chances proved costly as goals at the end of each half were enough for The Cumbrians to claim maximum points.

The Silkmen got off to the perfect start when Wilson fired us ahead in just the second minute, after a fantastic turn brought him some space just inside the opposition box.

Two minutes later, Tyrone Marsh’s teasing cross was desperately put over his own crossbar by Carlisle defender Garry Liddle as Macc’s energetic start continued.

Marsh was involved again as we continued to apply pressure early on, but his 25-yard drive was kept out by Collin in the Carlisle goal.

The hosts grew into the game as the half progressed and O’Hara produced a stunning stop to keep Devitt from levelling the scores on the 20-minute mark.

Marsh was again unfortunate not to double the lead for Macc shortly after, but his powerful effort flew agonisingly wide of the far post.

The hosts ramped up the pressure as half time approached, as O’Hara once again did well to keep the scores level when he denied Devitt after the Carlisle man was played through on goal.

Carlisle would not be frustrated for much long however, as Hallam Hope equalised for The Cumbrians just before the interval as he fired into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

The Silkmen had one last chance to retake the lead before the break, but Marsh fired over the bar after some concerted late pressure.

Macc continued to aassert themselves as the second half got underway, with Koby Arthur being the next to test Collin in the Carlisle goal, - but his effort was smartly saved at the near post.

Carlisle then started to take control of the game with Liddle then denied by O’Hara, before Devitt’s penalty appeals were waved away by the referee.

Hope then had a chance from a similar position to that from which he levelled the scores at the end of the first half, but he could only fire over the bar - much to the relief of the loyal away contingent.

With fifteen minutes to go the lively Marsh was involved once more, but his tantalising cross agonisingly evaded Wilson at the far post.

Wilson tried his luck once more with 10 minutes to go, but his shot was easily gathered by Collin In the Carlisle goal.

Carlisle’s winner came with just two minutes remaining on the clock, after Grainger played a sublime ball in from the left which was turned into the far corner by Yates.
