Big week for the Youth Team

Posted on: Mon 16 Nov 2009

Saturday's game against Shrewsbury Town may have fallen foul to the awful weather but in many ways that could prove to be a blessing in disguise as the Youth Team prepare for their FA Youth Cup sponsored by E-ON 2nd Round encounter with Bury Town.

And with the drawn for the 3rd Round having already been made, the winners can look forward to a trip to the City Ground and an encounter with Nottingham Forest.

We spoke to John Askey first thing this morning for his thoughts on the weekend's postponement and tomorrow night's cup game.

"The referee really had little choice to call the game off on Saturday if I am honest," said John. "The surface was very difficult as it was in the morning and with more rain forecast it was the sensible thing to do. As it happened the rain was a lot heavy than expected so the game would potentially have been a bit of a lottery."

"Ordinarily you want to get games played but you couldn't really have any complaints. We trained for a couple of hours instead so the day wasn't totally wasted. Plus with a few of our lads carrying knocks the extra few days will hopefully ensure they are 100% for the game on Tuesday at Bury."

And Forest await the winners?

That's right. I'm not really a fan of the draw for the next round being made before these games have been played. It can prove a distraction as we found to our cost last season. We were paired with Everton last season at the same stage but weren't able to beat Nantwich. Whether we were guility of looking too far ahead I don't know. That certainly won't be the case this time around. Bury Town beat Walsall in the last round so they clearly are no mugs.

However were we to get through it would be a great test for the lads. Forest, despite being in the Championship, are an Academy side and play against Premier League opposition week in, week out. So they will have a lot of talent available to them. But as I have said already, we have to beat Bury Town first.

So any special preparations for the game?

No not really. We'll prepare for it just like any other game. Clearly it will involve more travelling and we'll be setting off at 11 in the morning to give us time for a stretch and pre-match meal before the game. It's not a ground I know but from what I have seen it looks a good set up and hopefully all the rain over the weekend won't have done too much damage. We just have to go there, be strong, played to our strengths and show the same character as we did against the other Bury in Round One.

And what's the news on the injury front?

We'll have to wait and see. A couple of the lads are definately out and a few more will require late fitness tests. If things don't go our way we might not be able to fill the bench. But I know the lads are up for the game, and whichever eleven we put out there will be ready for the challenge.
