Macclesfield Town 0 Wrexham 1

Posted on: Mon 06 Oct 2008

Despite playing well and enjoying the majority of possession in a scrappy game at the Moss Rose on Saturday, the youth team were once again left ruing a string of chances when the visitors snatched the points late on after a mix up at the back.

With eleven minutes left to play centre half Michael Thomas, with no cover behind him, lost possession to George Stewart, allowing the pacy winger to advance on goal and steer the ball past a stranded Ryan Moss in the Silkmen net.

It left John Askey's team still in search of their first win, a result not helped by some heavy unpunished challenges from the Welsh side that had the manager fuming.

"I don't think the referee gave us enough protection today," said a frustrated John Askey. "We had three players carried off during the game, a result of what I felt were blatant fouls. Steffen Backer-Rowley was unceremoniously dumped into their dugout as the player followed through with his challenge. Thankfully he wasn't seriously injured but his back is covered in bruising and he won't be training at all this week."

"Tom France is sporting a nice set of stud marks down his leg and Vinny Mukendi couldn't carry on after another above knee-high challenge that the referee chose to ignore. Like Steffen they will also be missing training this week."

"It certainly disrupted our flow but we still should have taken something from the game against a Wrexham team who are unbeaten so far this season. We just missing that bit of guile at the moment and making too many individual mistakes."

"I think we're certainly missing having the experience of a second year pro up front. It makes a big difference but we are making progress, despite the results and I am confident that first win is just around the corner."

Starting XI (4-3-3)

Moss, Lowe, Thomas, Torpey, Darlington. France, Perry, Beckett, Backer-Rowley, Mukendi, Daniels
