2009/10 MATCH REPORTS
Saturday August 15th
Stockport County 1-0 Macclesfield Town
Macclesfield Town's youngsters were beaten 1-0 by near neighbours Stockport County in wild and windy conditions on Saturday.
The result was a disappointment but the Silkmen were cursing their luck before the only goal of the game as Steffen Backer-Rowley picked up a nasty injury. Running alongside a County player, they both fell to the floor breaking Rowley's collarbone.
Adding injury to insult, County took the lead. A good through-ball down the right flank caught the defence out and the ball was drilled in to the roof of the net.
The Silkmen's youngsters were then unfortunate not to win a penalty as a foul which saw both players sprawling five yards in the area was given as a free kick two yards outside the box.
Saturday August 22nd
Macclesfield Town 5-1 Chester City
After losing 1-0 at Stockport the previous weekend the Silkmen earned their first win of the season with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Chester.
Greg Daniels opened the scoring after latching on to a ball played inside the full-back and hitting a shot into the far corner. Vinny Mukendi hit the second, powering a shot home after Sam Cook's head-down. Vinny took it on himself for the third, cutting inside from the left and firing a great shot home.
Cook, a first-year with the Silkmen, scored the goal of the game by cutting inside and firing his strike into the top corner. Cook hit his second with another solo effort, bringing the ball down in the box, he beat a defender and placed his shot to the right of the 'keeper. Chester scored a late consolation, but it didn't dampen the spirits of John Askey.
"It was a big win for us. After a disappointing game last week where we didn't perform, I think they all played to the levels we know they can. Chester have a good side, and got a good draw at Walsall last week. Their manager thinks it's the best set of lads they have had for a long time. So this was an excellent result.
"Last season we didn't get our first win until November so it was satisfying to get off the mark early this year. A couple of first-year players came in and did very well, and overall the good performance is the main thing we are looking for."
