1970 Wembley memorabilia sought

Posted on: Wed 31 Dec 2008

On Saturday, 2nd May 1970 Macclesfield Town Football Club created history by becoming the first ever winners of the F.A. Trophy when they beat Telford United 2 - 0 at Wembley Stadium.

The occasion captured the imagination of the whole town and more than 15,000 Maxonians made the journey south to cheer their heroes to victory.

The following evening saw scenes within the town the likes of which had not been seen before and are not likely to be seen again. It was estimated that 30,000 people lined the streets and market place to welcome the team home aboard their open-top bus.

Although still more than 12 months away Club Director, Geoff Findlow, is already planning a 40th Anniversary celebration of that unforgettable and historic weekend. He would like to hear from anyone who knows of the existence of any items of memorabilia from that wonderful occasion. Items such as scarves, hats, rattles, programmes, tickets, rosettes, banners, etc. In particular, he is interested in any photographs or cine film footage taken by the many supporters who it is known used cameras during the weekend which he could borrow or copy and use as part of the celebrations.

Anyone who can help with information regarding memorabilia can contact Geoff via the Club. Any help would be very much appreciated and would greatly assist in making the celebrations a wonderful occasion for the surviving members of the Wembley team (all of whom are expected to attend) and the supporters.
