Hamza signed for the club in July 2009 following his release from Nottingham Forest. Unable to force his way into Billy Davies' plans at the City Ground, the former Algerian U20 international had an immediate impact, scoring five times before the end of October for the Silkmen.
A commanding figure who is capable of playing both at the back and in the middle of the park, Hamza's first full season in the Football League was however cruelly cut short by a broken ankle, sustained during the Silkmen's trip to Rochdale in early December. It was a big blow to the team, and an injury that was to keep him out of the team for the rest of the season. However Hamza was offered a new deal in the summer and featured in pre-season as he continued on the comeback trail.
