Stephen began his career as a trainee at Yeovil Town where he made his senior debut aged just 17. Whilst at Yeovil he had loan spells with Forest Green, Woking and Aldershot before moving to Torquay United in 2006.
That summer he joined the Gulls on a permanent contract and featured in 19 games before leaving Plainmoor in February of 2007. He then spent a short time at Tiverton Town before joining Weston Super Mare until the end of the season.
He spent 2007/8 at the Abbey Stadium playing 44 times including both legs of the play-offs, the final against Exeter, and a narrow FA Cup defeat to Wolves
Leaving Cambridge in the summer of 2008 he joined Weymouth, playing 32 Conference matches, including captaining the side. He signed for the Silkmen in the summer of 2009.
