Men in the Middle - Chesterfield

Posted on: Wed 25 Aug 2010

We take our regular look at the men in the middle for this weekend's match.

Referee - Phil Gibbs
Mr Gibbs was promoted to the League Referee list in 2006 after impressing at Conference level and was given an opening match involving the Silkmen as we travelled to Shrewsbury on opening day of 2008/9. The Silkmen were beaten 4-0 on the day but had better luck in what is to date the only other time Mr Gibbs has taken charge of a Macclesfield Town game.

Gareth Evans scored twice, once from the spot, as the Silkmen beat Darlington 2-1 away from home the same season.

This will be his fifth match of the season. He has previously given out 10 yellows and is yet to issue a red card.

One to Watch - Danny Whitaker
A player who needs no introduction to the Silkmen faitful, Danny Whitaker came through the ranks at the Moss Rose before scoring on his senior debut against Exeter City. He went on to make more than 200 appearances for the club, scoring 32 times from midfield, including a 14 minute hat-trick against Barnsley in the League Cup in 2002.

He eventually left the Silkmen in 2006 to join Port Vale, scoring 13 goals in 86 League games, before moving again to Oldham where he spent another two years. He left Oldham after 80 League matches before joining Chesterfield in the summer.

So far he has scored three goals in his four games - all three coming as he took the match-ball in last weekend's 4-0 win over Hereford.
