Each season the various relegations and promotions can have a big impact on the both the finances at a football club and also on the level of support both at both home and away games.
Next season the Silkmen will face six different opponents, two coming up from the Blue Square Premier and four dropping down from League One.
Assessing the impact is an important part of the budgeting process and club chairman Mike Rance readily admits to the fact that Dagenham's win at Wembley at the weekend will have pleased our bank manager.
"I've gone on record before as saying that since getting involved with the club I've tended to not so much to focus purely on the relative merits of the teams we play on the field, as I did when I was on the terraces, but more on how many fans they will bring to the Moss Rose!"
"Losing the Grimsby fixture next season was a bit of a blow as they always brought with them a healthy following. And the same could be said had Rotherham been promoted. If you look at last season, 743 fans made the trip over from South Yorkshire as opposed to just 137 from Dagenham. That's a difference of over 600 which represents a fairly significant sum of money to a club like ours."
"Elsewhere we've obviously lost the Rochdale and Notts County games who both had over 1000 away fans cheering them on. But to counter that we've got our local derby back with Stockport who brought over 2000 fans with them to the Moss Rose the last time they were here."
"Hopefully the new boys, Oxford and Stevenage will bring a few fans with them. So all in all its about on a par with last year. Of course things can change and a lot will depend on how the fixtures fall. So we'll take a more detailed look at them when they are published in just over two weeks' time."
On the Road
Five of the six new teams we will play are of course located in the south. Oxford is a round trip of 298 miles, which is not too bad when compared to Stevenage (358), Wycombe (330), Gillingham (450) and Southend (434).
The only saving grace is the 26 mile round trip to Stockport and the fact we no longer have to travel to Dagenham and Bournemouth.
In total, using Google Maps, the Silkmen will travel a total 4898 miles attending away games next season in the League, still one of the lowest in the division. That's 614 up on the season just finished.
And returning to the finances, this will also involve an additional two, possibly three overnight stays subject to how the fixtures fall.
