Club Connections - Bradford

Posted on: Sun 04 Apr 2010

We take our regular look at the links between the two clubs.

PAST ENCOUNTERS
This weekend's game is the eighth meeting between these two sides with the first coming back in 1970 in the FA Cup. After early Macc pressure, the Silkmen fell behind to a controversial penalty. But Brian Fidler equalised in the second half, only for the Bantams to score again two minutes later.

Lyon equalised again for the Silkmen with 10 minutes to play, and were dreaming of a replay before Bradford, then in the Fourth Division stole the win late on.

31 years later, Bradford, then in the Championship, were the visitors to the Moss Rose in the League Cup. The Silkmen took the lead after 57 minutes through Lee Glover and began to dominate the game. But Bradford equalised through Andy Todd and the score remained at 1-1 at the final whistle to bring extra-time.

The heartbreaker came with only five minutes remaining in the 115th minute of play as Stuart McCall rifled in a 30 yard drive to give Lee Martin no chance.

The first meeting on level terms in the Football League game came on opening day of the 2007/8 season. Franny Green scored for the Silkmen on his debut in the first half on a sweltering day. But a penalty earned the home side a point in front of a crowd of more than 13,000. Bradford won the Moss Rose game 1-0.

Last season the Silkmen lost both games. Two early goals from Thorne had the game at the Moss Rose won in the first 15 minutes of a 2-0 win, before the Bantams were 1-0 victors on their own patch.

Earlier this season the Silkmen looked set to win their first match against the Bantams after goals from Bencherif and Daniel set up a 2-0 half-time lead. But goals from Hanson and Williams saw the visitors take a point.
