Wrighty's thoughts on Daggers trip

Posted on: Fri 19 Mar 2010

Ben Wright believe the team can take a lot of confidence from last Saturday's win over promotion chasing Bury as they prepare for Saturday's clash with Dagenham & Redbridge.

The Silkmen dealt with all the Shakers had to offer in a comprehensive 2-0 win at the Moss Rose, with the striker scoring the all important first goal and he is hoping for a repeat performance in Essex.

The team set off at 10am this morning for the long trip south, and despite an overnight stay and sharing a room with Lee Bell, Ben was looking forward to the challenge of facing another of the division's top teams.

"Dagenham is a tough place to go and they have some big and strong players in their team," explained Ben. "They like to get the ball forward quickly so we'll be under a lot of pressure. But if we can get through the first 15 minutes I see no reason why we can't continue our unbeaten run. That's what we all believe and we're all looking forward to the game."

Is it disruptive having to stay overnight?

I'm used to it by now but if I had a choice I would sooner spend the night at home. But Dagenham to such a long trip that it makes sense to travel down the day before. We've a great bunch of lads at the club and we usually have a bit of a laugh so it's good for team spirit spending the time together.

What even if you have to share with Lee Bell!

(Laughs) Belly's all right. And at least he doesn't snore which is a good thing when you are having to share a room!!

How's training been this week?

We've been a bit short of numbers due to all the injuries but it has been lively and that's credit to the lads and Simmo who has been superb these past few weeks.

How's he coping?

He's been first class. The lads have got a lot of respect for Gary and we know how close he was to Keith. We all were but Simmo in particular. He gave a very emotional talk after the Bury game and you can see how much the news has affected him. As a player you can't not respond to that.

You must have been pleased with your performance against Bury?

As a striker, sometimes you can play well and the fact you haven't scored taints your view on the day's events. Thankfully I got a goal which was really pleasing and I felt I did ok against two tough centre halves in Futcher and Sodje.

It looked a tough battle?

It was and that is more often than not the case in League Two. There are a lot of 'fight balls' that as a striker you need to compete for and get those flicks ons. But it was just pleasing to get a goal and hopefully I can get another one on Saturday.

We want to get into a position of having secured our League Two status as soon as we can. It's hard to know exactly how many points we need, but I would have thought a couple more wins would be enough. But we can't afford to go into games with that attitude. We want to pick up points in every game we've got left to play, starting tomorrow.
