The close season is typically a time for players to recharge their batteries in readiness for the season ahead. And whilst midfielder Lee Bell can't wait for it all to get going again, he's been busier than ever as he prepares for the arrival of his first child later this year.
We caught up with Lee earlier today for a quick chat to find out how he has been keeping busy, his thoughts on the new signings and the prospects for the coming campaign.
So we hear you've been busy around the house Lee?
"That's right. We're busy decorating in readiness for our new baby which is due in September. So it's been pretty hectic to be honest. But it's looking good and we're both excited and looking forward to the big day."
And keen to get back into training no doubt?
"Absolutely! You get to the end of a long season and you do need the rest. But after a few weeks I was ready to go again. We report back on July 1st and for me it can't come around quick enough. To be honest I am bored now and I just want to get back."
What are you thought's on the new signings?
"It's good to see and whilst I don't know any of the new lads personally from what I've read, and the people I've spoken to, they seem good players. I know the gaffer is keen to bring in more so I am looking forward to meeting them all and winning games for the football club. Pre-season is always a strange time as you get to know your new team mates. But it is surprising how quickly you get to bond and make new friendships. So again, I',m looking forward to it."
So where you pleased with your performances last season?
"I felt I got a lot stronger towards the end of the campaign and probably played my best football in the last fifteen games. Unfortunately I picked up a knock which meant I missed the final match but overall I was happy with my performances but still think there is more to come.
You were captain in one of those games?
"That's right. It was a great honour, something I enjoyed and something I would like to do again. I enjoyed the extra responsibility and think the position suits my style of football. And would certainly have no hesitation in doing it again if asked.
And how have you been keeping fit?
"What apart from the decorating! Well I've been doing a lot of swimming which is good way of keeping the fitness levels up without putting too much impact stress on the limbs and joints. So whilst I know pre-season is going to be tough, hopefully it won't come as a big shock to the system as I've been fairly active since the season finished last month."
And what of our chances?
"We were all disappointed with where we finished last time around. So the first target has to be to improve on that. But I'm not one for setting specific targets but if we can get off to a good start that will be a big plus. Last season's poor start probably affected us more than we realised at the time. So it's important we hit the ground running. If we can do that then I don't see why we shouldn't be in the top half of the table challenging.
"I don't think the sides that went up this season were that much better than anyone else. They were just more consistent. We need to string unbeaten runs together and make ourselves harder to beat. If we can do that then we give ourselves every chance."
