Silkmen Sign Reed

Posted on: Thu 21 May 2009

Macclesfield Town have made their second new signing of the summer by bringing in Weymouth left-back Stephen Reed on a one year contract.

The 23 year-old defender can already boast Football League experience with Yeovil and Torquay and two full seasons in the Conference with Cambridge and Weymouth.

He began his career as a trainee at Yeovil Town where he made his senior debut aged just 17 in a 4-0 away win at Dagenham and Redbridge. His Football League debut came the following season.

The next season, 2004/05, saw 19 year old Stephen moving on loan to Forest Green where he played nine times before returning to Huish Park and returning to the Yeovil first-team.

2005/06 saw further loan spells to Woking and Aldershot before ending the season in the Football League with Torquay where he played 11 times including a 2-0 win over Macclesfield at the Moss Rose.

That summer he joined the Gulls on a permanent contract and featured in 19 games before leaving Plainmoor in February of 2007. He then spent a short time at Tiverton Town before joining Weston Super Mare until the end of the season.

Cambridge United swooped for his signature that summer and he spent 2007/8 at the Abbey Stadium showing his versatility by playing on the left side of midfield as well as at the back, as well as playing the part of set-piece specialist. In all he played 44 times including both legs of the play-offs, the final against Exeter, and a narrow FA Cup defeat to Wolves (pictured).

Reed left Cambridge in the summer of 2008 and joined ambitious Weymouth, playing 32 Conference matches, including captaining the side. He was one of just a handful of players who stuck with Weymouth earlier this year when many players walked away from the club after not receiving wages for two months at the financialy troubled club.
