Young defender Matthew Flynn says goodbye to his teens this weekend and believes the offer of a new contract was the best birthday present ever.
But whilst he is eager to make the very most of the opportunity at the Moss Rose next season, as befits his character, he was thoughtful of his former colleagues who are now looking for a new club.
"Yesterday was tough," admitted Flynny. "From a personal point of I was over the moon to be offered a new deal. But at the same time a lot of others weren't."
"I realise its part and parcel of the game but it doesn't make it any easier. They're my mates and you feel for them."
"The last few months it is always in the back of your mind. Not knowing whether you are going to get offered a new deal does play on you as this is my livelihood. But the gaffer took me to one side a few weeks ago and set there was every chance I would be, so that eased my mind."
"It makes you doubly determined to work harder than ever before. I know I am incredibly lucky to be a professional footballer and I want to make the most of it."
After a frustrating first year as a pro, when he failed to feature for the Silkmen, Flynny had set himself the target of reaching double figures. In the end he made a total of 31 appearances in all competitions.
"I've been surprised to have played so much, if I'm honest," he explained. "Having aimed for double figures, it was great to be involved in so many more games."
"At the same time it's been tough results haven't really gone our way. I hate losing as much as anyone. From a personal point of view I think my game has improved but I know there is more I can do."
"I think more than anything I am now more confident as a player. Early on in the season I was probably a bit too self conscious of making a mistake. Now I have a lot more confidence in my own ability and I can't wait for next season to start. If I had the choice my preferred position is centre half or right back. But I do enjoy the odd time I have played centre mid. I'll play anywhere I am asked."
So what's the plan for the close season?
"The first thing is to get a bit of rest and enjoy some time away. I'm heading off to Egypt with the missus next week so that should be good."
"There won't be any excesses though! We've got our training plan to work to and we know we have to be in shape when we report back on July 1st."
