Striker says his farewells
After training with his new colleagues for the first time yesterday, Martin Gritton returned to the Moss Rose to collect his personal belongings today and say goodbye to his former colleagues.
And according to the likeable thirty year old, who is almost unique in the game by not having an agent, the move had taken him as much by surprise as anyone.
"The first I knew of the move was when the gaffer pulled me to one side and told me of Chesterfield's interest earlier this week," explained Martin. "Being out of contract at the end of the season was obviously something in the back of my mind but I can honestly say I didn't envisage anything happening so quickly."
"From a personal point of view it was a bit wrench to leave as I have had a great time at the Moss Rose and made lots of new friends who I am sure I will keep in touch with. But having spoken to Chesterfield it didn't take too long to decide the move was right for me."
"Relatively speaking I was on good money at Macclesfield. And I would be lying if I was expecting to be offered the same terms. Things have changed and as a footballer that is what you have to come to terms with."
"A two and a half year deal is a big plus for me and with the club about to move to a new ground, I am excited about the prospects. But it will still feel strange not driving to the Moss Rose everyday. And it will be even weirder when the two sides meet later on in the season."
"I would like to however thank everyone at the club for the support they have shown me and I appreciate how professional they have been in allowing me the opportunity to move. And of course I wish everyone all the very best of luck for the future."
