Three in five for Martin

Posted on: Mon 08 Dec 2008

It may not have been as impressive as his previous strikes against Port Vale and Barnet, but for Martin Gritton, his goal against Bury on Saturday was just as important.

"Having got turned over at Wycombe on the Tuesday, we knew the importance of a good start. So it was great to get our noses in front," explained Martin.

"And it may have only been from three yards but they all count and from a personal level it was pleasing to get on the scoresheet again, especially as it was in front of our home fans."

"We got caught out with a bit of a sucker punch for their goal but that aside I thought we bossed the game up to the break. They had a fifteen minute spell in the second half but we came back into the game up to Flynn's red card."

"It was disappointing as technically if you looked at both challenges they were possibly worthy of a yellow card. But it did seem a little harsh. But Matt's that kind of player. He's a strong lad and growing in confidence and whilst no one likes getting sent off, I am sure he will learn from the experience and come back a better player for it."

Martin's goal on Saturday was his third in the space of 5 games, something he believes is down to his extended run in the team.

"This season has been a bit stop-start. Having scored against Blackpool, I struggled with injuries, picked up a red card myself which as a result meant I hadn't enjoyed a settled run in the team."

"The gaffer is not afraid to make changes, especially up front, and in myself, Franny, Gareth and Simon, not to mention some of the younger lads, he has several options. Simon likes to gamble and is great at making runs into space. Franny tends to like the ball to feet and use his skill to beat his men whereas Gareth has a lot of energy and is very direct."

"I don't think anyone could have complained had they been dropped after Wycombe. Luckily I got the nod on Saturday and I am enjoying getting a regular game. Whilst I know I will be judged on my goalscoring, a big part of my game is being the outlet from the team, acting as the target to hold the ball up and play off whoever I am partnered with. It is something I continue to work hard on and hopefully the fans can see what we are trying to achieve."

"We're creating chances, which is good but on Saturday we just couldn't find the back on the net. On any other day I reckon we could have had two or three by the break."

"But despite that I think we can take a lot of positives from the game.

You can see why they are up there in the play-off places. And we did well to restrict Bishop and Hurst to just a handful of chances. They've two big lads at the back and certainly try and restrict space (Ed - judging by this picture we can see what you mean!)"
