The Silkmen's FA Cup adventure is over for another season after a 2-0 defeat at Bolton Wanderers in front of just under 10,000. But a sterling second half performance could arguably have deserved at least a shot at extra time.

With the Silkmen's crippling injury list it was always going to be a tough ask against a very strong Bolton side and it was Kevin Davies, who made his England debut only last year, who opened the scoring after just 37 seconds. A ball in from Petrov eluded Jon Bateson and was met by Davies whose show somehow squirmed past Veiga who looked to have made the save.

Elliott Hewitt tried his luck with a long shot and Matt Hamshaw tested Bogdan with a cross, but the home side remained on top. And there was just over 25 minutes on the clock when Bolton hit their second with an inch perfect low drive from Martin Petrov.

Hamshaw and Klasnic traded shots at either end, but the half had petered out with Bolton happy to rest on their laurels for the remainder of the half. The Silkmen did win a corner in first half injury time, but it was cleared.

Half time

Waide Fairhurst replaced Sam Wedgbury at half time, and the start of the second half saw the Silkmen almost in with a chance early on, but Mark Davies cynically fouled Fairhurst to stop the attack after Mendy had won the ball in midfield.

Adam Bogdan did well to blockcross from Hamshaw and Daniel had a go at running at Boyata, got a shot away but it was blocked by the fullback.

Coling Daniel then saw a header blocked, and the rebound was seemingly handballed by Davies in the area. It dropped to Tremarco who was denied a third FA Cup goal this season by a good save from Bogdan.

Klasnic's shot was blocked by Hewitt before Brisley could have found himself on the score-sheet. Jon Bateson's free kick finding him in the penalty area, but his header was well saved.

At the other end, the Silkmen found themselves under pressure when Ngog found Robinson in the penalty area, but it was smuggled away by the Silkmen.

The Silkmen were having a much better second half, and won a free kick. It was powered in by Carl Tremarco to Waide Fairhurst, but he couldn't control it and his shot went wide from a good position.

The Silkmen piled on the pressure winning two corners in succession after Hewitt saw a shot just deflected over the corner saw Hamshaw's kick was half cleared by Davies and powered in by Diagne, but deflected wide. The third eventually fell to Daniel, but his strike was saved by Bogdan.

As with the first match, the Silkmen were questioning the referee as Boyata - who looked to have been the last man - brought down Hewitt 35 yards from goal, and was only given a yellow card. The free kick from Fairhurst hit the wall, but rebounded to Hewitt, and his cross found Fairhurst again who forced another shot from Bogdan.

Another corner for the Silkmen when Hamshaw's cheeky lob was deflected over the bar, but it was his final action of the game as he was replaced by Mukendi.

The corner was cleared for a throw, which was taken by Tremarco, and flashed across the face of goal without anyone able to take a touch. It ran out for another throw, and Bateson took it, had the ball headed back to him and crossed brilliantly to Daniel - but his header whipped inches past the post.

Time was running out for the Silkmen and youngster George Whiteoak was handed his senior debut for the club - replacing Jon Bateson - and his first act was to be somewhat harshly pulled up for a foul as the game reached three minutes of injury time.

There was a final chance for the Silkmen as Fairhurst won the ball deep in the Bolton half ran at goal, but couldn't get the shot away to give the Silkmen supporters something to cheer.
