Attendance:

In an open game the Silkmen started strongly against the League newcomers. Kevin Gall, as expected, looked useful for the visitors but it was the Silkmen who were fastest out of the blocks as Flitcroft found Carruthers down the right. The big striker cut in for goal and his looping shot took a deflection off a defender and dipped into the Star Lane net to give the Silkmen an early lead.

Yeovil looked dangerous on the break but with Munroe in fine form and Myhill looking solid the game was continuing to go the Silkmen's way. Tipton was put in by Carruthers but couldn't steer the ball wide of the keeper. A Macc corner followed and from the resulting cross the ball reached Whitaker on the edge of the box and his sweet volley flew in to give the Silkmen some clear water.
Welch replaced the injured Macauley in defence and was immediately pressed into action as the visitors pressed for a reply.
Macc were defending too deep but reached the haven of half time with their two goal lead intact.

The second half kicked off with the Silkmen attacking the Away End but the pattern of play was similar. The Glovers were pressing to get back in the game but Michael Welch and Karl Munroe were coping well with the dangerous Yeovil attack.
When Yeovil did pull one back on the hour it was a gift. George Abbey was adjudged to have fouled the Yeovil winger on the right close to the goal line. With the Silkmen back line dreaming Johnson didn't wait for the referee's whistle. He chipped in a simple ball for Lockwood to head into an undefended goal.
At 2-1 it was game on but Macc withstood the early pressure well and looked likely to score on the break. First Tipton broke through but his left foot shot was well saved. Then a mazy John Miles run ended when he just failed to find Carruthers in acres of space.
Carruthers was booked for dissent after he appeared to have been fouled but he responded in the best possible way, beating the Yeovil keeper to his right after being put through by a neat Miles touch from a long Myhill clearance.
With a two goal lead restored Macc were in the driving seat. Yeovil huffed and puffed but it was no real surprise when, with full time approaching, Danny Whitaker cut in from the right to score his second with a great strike from the edge of the area.
So Macc's season, finally, is up and running. 4-1 was probably a little flattering on the day but, with the chances of previous games being converted to goals this afternoon, everyone left Moss Rose with their spirits high.
