Accrington Reaction

Posted on: Wed 10 Mar 2010

We spoke to Gary Simpson after the Silkmen hard earned draw at Accrington Stanley.

Was it hard to lift the players after such an emotional day on Saturday?

"I thought it would be harder today. It's a cold Tuesday night on a pitch that wasn't the best, but I thought the lads put in a great shift today."

We were on the back foot a bit tonight, but had a very patched up side.

"Accrington are a very strong side. They have a good home record and they are a good side and have been going well this year. But we went into this with a game plan and we stuck to it.

"We thought we might catch them out with the pace we had up front and before they scored we could have been a goal up from it. Emile has got through a couple of times and Belly has hit the bar with a fantastic strike."

"But at the other end, they have hit the post, two have hit Brainy and we've had to defend very well."

What about the penalty? Their fans weren't happy with it.

"Is anyone happy with a penalty against them? But it was absolutely blatant. The liner is stood directly opposite him and as soon as it happened he has his flag over his chest. He's 10 yards away looking at it and had no hesitation.

"You know Tippy is going to have a great chance to score them, but perhaps a little bit of luck with it hitting both posts.

"Perhaps the Gaffer is looking down on us and giving us a little bit of luck."

Bury on Saturday will be tough and another emotional day.

"It will be a difficult game against another side who are going very well. They are a big, strong physical side and we might be down to the bones a bit in the squad.

"We've got the injuries we've had already and now Paul Bolland might be out with what could be a cracked rib. So we're hoping that Reid, Tremarco and Sappleton might be back for Saturday."

Tonight was the last game in Butcher's loan spell. Are we going to keep him on?

"We wanted to keep Butch until the end of the season and hoped to have that sorted this week, but Lincoln think they need him now because they have a few injuries so we might lose him.

"But he took a knock today as well so I'm not sure if he'll be fit for either of us on Saturday because I had to take him off.

"But even with the injuries and other problems we've had we'll keep getting the players together and keep having a go at teams."
