Silkmen launch online archive.

Posted on: Mon 31 Oct 2011

For the first time the club has an archive web site bringing together a significant amount of player and match information in one place at www.silkmenarchives.org.uk.

There is an alphabetical list of players going back to 1930, with profiles for the majority together with many photographs.

Many interesting facts are recorded such as - discover who usually played in his glasses, the player who was sent off by the referee to have a protruding nail in one his boots knocked back in and double hat-trick scorers.

55 years of match detail is listed, including teams, scorers and attendances together with most results going back to 1946. There is a breakdown of appearances and goals season by season, as well as a Head to Head list for the Northern Premier League, Conference and Football League, achievements, including hat-tricks, top ten appearances and scorers, an overview and more.

In the 1990s Chris Pugsley, former programme editor and kit-man, undertook a substantial amount of research on which Geoff Knights has built using his own records, information from matchday programmes and research at the Macclesfield library, Silk Museum and the Internet.

Many of the photographs are the work of the former club official photographer, John Rooney, with more recent photographs supplied by Peter Hilton, the current official photographer.Others have come from various sources including the chairman's archive.

Thanks go to Geoff Findlow, former director of the club, for his help with information for the Cheshire League, Trevor Goodey, a keen supporter, for his research at the library and overall assistance, Michael Hughes, one time club doctor, for his proof reading and last, but by no means least, to Mike Scott who has worked extremely hard building the web site for us.

There is still much work to be done, however, the short term goal is to complete research back to 1946. In addition, some information is incomplete because matches have not been reported in the local press, there are gaps in the filming of the Macclesfield Express at the library and/or match information has not been included in matchday programmes.Geoff will be pleased to hear from anyone who has any of this information (see the Contact Us section of the web site) so that the blanks can be completed. For many players there are no photographs. If anyone has a photograph which can be used on the site, again please let Geoff know.

The club is grateful to Life Vice-president Geoff Knights for sponsoring the on-going annual operating and the initial development software costs.

At the start of the 2009/10 season the Silkmen gave away a copy of Geoff Knight's book 'The League Story So Far' to season ticket holders.

Geoff has continued to work on the book and to bring it up to date and since then has released two further chapters charting the events of eventful and emotional campaigns in both 2009/10 and 2010/11
