Derby day draw for Askey's men

Macclesfield Town were held to a 0-0 draw in their derby match away at Altrincham at Moss Lane as neither of the sides could find a goal during the close-fought encounter.

The visitors started better leaving the Robins on the back-foot during a fast-paced opening 20 mins, several chances were created by Jack Sampson and David Fitzpatrick on the left, however no one could tuck away their crosses.

Macc came closest to opening the scoring 20 minutes in, after a foul on the edge of the area, captain Paul Turnbull stepped up and his effort crashed into the crossbar leaving it 0-0.

The derby startes heating up as both teams were trying to force openings, an altercation between Kristian Dennis and Robin’s captain Jake Moult saw the tempo rise. Just one minute later Macc briefly went down to 10-men after Fitzpatrick went into the dressing room to receive treatment to his face after a challenge.

James Lawrie had a long ranged volley for the hosts, however it blazed over the bar leaving Silkmen goalkeeper Shwan Jalal’s goal intact for the first half as it ended goalless.

After Turnbull came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half with the only good chance created, the second half started off just as scrappy with both sides struggling to play smart football under the unfavourable conditions.

Altrincham nearly opened the scoring 63 minutes in, Damian Reeves who came on just one minute before nearly made an instant impact after his chipped effort just fell wide of Jalal’s goal.

With John Askey’s side looking to create more in the final third, Jimmy Phillips and Chris Holroyd were introduced, Holroyd almost made an impact straight as well, after some good work on the ball his cross found Dennis, but Dennis’ flicked effort was denied by Tim Deasy.

As the Silkmen continued to press they struggled to create another real chance on goal and had to settle for just one point at Moss Lane.
