Macclesfield Town picked up a huge three points in the National League today as they beat Welling 1-0 at Park View Road.
In-form striker Kristian Dennis delivered another fine display for the Silkmen as his single goal was enough to give Macc maximum points after a hard fought match.
The win ensured that Macclesfield crept closer to the play-off positions, as they now sit 6th in the table just two points off Dover who occupy the final spot.
The Silkmen enjoyed a perfect start to the game as Dennis found space deep in the Welling half, allowing him to fire in a wonderful left footed strike from distance after just six minutes, his 18th league goal of the season.
Barney Williams then gave Welling their first meaningful sight of goal, the winger cut in from the right hand side and drilled a shot low into the near post, but Shwan Jalal was on hand with a smart save.
After 20 minutes played both sides were still trying to assert their dominance in possession, Welling were looking to find their forwards running in behind the last man but they were unable to break down the Macclesfield defence.
George Porter came close to grabbing the equaliser for Welling after 24 minutes, however his glancing header at the near post went just over the crossbar.
George Pilkington’s looping header then forced Mike McEntegart to push the ball behind. The following corner broke to David Fitzpatrick who nearly doubled the Silkmen’s lead with his sweetly struck effort, but the keeper managed to get finger tips on the ball.
The first half came to a close with the Silkmen holding onto a 1-0 lead, it was a half of few chances at either end, but Dennis’ early opener was the difference maker.
Welling pushed forward at the start of the second half and it was Porter who came closest to grabbing an equaliser for the home side, but he saw his header rebound off the woodwork at the back post.
Macc then started to reverse the run of play as Whitaker lofted the ball into Sampson who rose well, only to guide his headed effort just over the bar.
Welling sub, Tashan Adeyinka then looked to have found a few yards of space in the Macc box, but Andy Halls made a brilliant recovering challenge before the forward could turn and get his shot away.
The home side had the Silkmen pegged back around the hour mark, however Danny Rowe did well to break on the counter attack and find Dennis in the box, but the striker’s effort was cleared from the goal mouth.
Chris Holroyd had half a chance to extend Macc’s lead in the 77th minute, he skipped past his marker in the box and space opened up for the midfielder to let a shot go but he couldn’t get the right connection on the ball.
Macclesfield did well to slow the ball down and retain possession towards the end of the game, and Sampson’s hold up play began to frustrate the home side.
Welling attempted to deliver numerous balls into the box but it was too little too late as the Silkmen managed to close out the game and pick up the 1-0 victory.
